Space for Grace

My husband and I sing together in our church choir.  We look forward to our ‘date night’ every week, and often stack other together time around it.  Singing contributes to our wellbeing in so many ways. Deep diaphragmatic breathing calms the nervous system and oxygenates the blood.  Music reading engages all parts of our brain which helps ward off dementia and improves concentration.  Choirs are full of friends and positive social interactions.  Controlled release of air improves lung and immune function.  And of course, singing improves our mood.

Our lovely choir director has a phrase she uses that is so helpful, and that gives me cause to pause and reflect.  When things go a little bit off course, as they sometimes do when you’re trying to get folks to do a series of complex tasks all at the same time, she will say, “That’s okay, we’ll just ask for some space for grace!”  It’s such a lovely statement of acceptance, non-judgement, encouragement and resilience all tied up in a cute little rhyme.

When my ears hear ‘space for grace’, my heart hears so much more.  I affirm for myself that:

I allow myself to accept that I am not perfect.

I choose to release any shame, guilt or anxiety that comes with my imperfection.

I allow myself to accept the grace and acceptance given freely by others.

I can offer grace and acceptance to myself and to others.

I am a grace-seeking, grace-giving imperfect human.

Maybe you have places where you can ask for some space for grace?  Maybe you can even give some grace to others who might need it too.
